The East Black German/DDR Black German Shepherd
This was started back in the 1940s and 1950’s when East and West Germany were separated. Black German Shepherd was bred for their work capability rather than their looks. In the East of part Germany, breeding of eastern BGS dogs was greatly regulated, to ensure that large, strong dogs were the result.
Features and Role
BGSDs are mostly dark colored and have more wolfish features. The East Black German dogs are usually sturdy working type but can also make a good substitute for a house pet if trained correctly.
The Eastern European Black German Shepherd
The East European Black German Shepherd is a large-sized cross between German Shepherds and Russian breeds including the Central Asian Shepherd Dog and the Caucasian Shepherd Dog.
The Eastern European Black GSD’s were particularly bred for police and military dogs. These dogs are also used as a guide to blind and for therapy. They have a wolf-like head, pricked ears, extended neck, moderately wide chest, oval eyes, and a thick and curved tail.
The Czech Black German Shepherd
The Czech BGS dogs among their cousins are the most wolfish. These dogs are distinct and very different in coloration and body style from the show lines of Canada, German, and American. The Black Czech Shepherds are often recognized by their dark thick coats and straight backs.
Difference between Black Czech BGS do and Pure Black GSD’s
Unlike the Pure German shepherd breed that are pure black, these dogs usually have a more even coloration with the most common colors being black, dark brown and wolfish grey.
These dogs were bred precisely to patrol the Czech border. One single kennel in Czechoslovakia was responsible for creating Czech Black GSD’s that focused entirely on alertness, their working drive, and a trainable nature.
However, these dogs are a rare occurrence than the other German shepherd types; they still make great family pets and are an excellent choice for police departments, search and rescue teams etc.
Royal/Mean/Pure Black German Shepherd
The Royal Black German shepherd is not a different breed; it is a solid black color German shepherd that just happens to be purebred. They have similar temperament as the rest of the GSD breeds.
Black GSD’s are a result when both parents of black German shepherds have the recessive alleles that give the German shepherd puppies a pure black coat color. As the black GSD’s are black from their birth they are rare standard colorings can be more expensive.
